Labrador Retriever

A strongly built, medium sized, all-purpose dog, the Labrador retriever has become one of the world’s most popular breeds. Males stand 57.2 – 62.2 cm (22.5-24.5 in) at the shoulder and weight 27-34 kg (60-75 lb), female are 54.6-59.7 cm (21.5-23.5 in) and weight 25-31.7 kg (55-70 lb). The labrador’s tail is medium in length, thick at the base, and tapering toward the tip. The short, dense coat has no feathering and is black, yellow, or chocolate. The Labrador originated in Newfoundland, where it aided fishermen. The dog’s express job was to swim to shore with the drag ends of fishing nets in their mouths. The men then took over the nets and dogs swam back to the boats.

The Labrador retriever is an accomplished swimmer. Originating in Newfoundland, it is used to retrieve waterflow and flush out and retrieve pheasant, grouse, and other upland game birds.
