The cocker spaniel is one of the smallest of the sporting dogs. Its name is derived from one of its early functions, hunting woodcock. Cocker spaniels are divided on the basis of color into three varieties; black, any solid color other than black any solid color other than black, and parti color.
Once indistinct from the larger English cocker spaniel, the American breed was developed into a specific type by U.S fanciers. It has a rounded skull, hanging ears, a docked tail, and heavy feathering on the chest and legs. Coker spaniels are about 31 to 38 cm (14 to 15 in) high at shoulders and typically weight about 11 kg (25 lb).
The cocker spaniel named for its ability to hunt woodcock is one of the smallest of the sporting dogs.
