Collie Dog

Collie is a herding dog that originated in Scotland. The two varieties of collies are the rough (long haired) and the smooth (shorthaired). The rough collie dog was used as a shepherd’s dog, whereas the smooth variety probably worked as drover, guiding cattle and sheep to market. The name collie is possibly derived from colley dog, a dog used to herd the now-extinct Scottish bred of colley sheep.

The collie was a slender but muscular body, a deep chest, a characteristic long, smooth muzzle, and erect ears, which bend forward near the tips. The tail is moderately long, with a slight upward curve at the end. In the rough collie, the heavy coat forms a mane around the forequarters, with feathering on the legs. There are four color type of dog; sable and white (brown and white), tricolor (black, white and brown), blue marle (mottled blue gray and black with white), and white (predominantly white).

Collie range are from 60 to 66 cm (23 in to 26 in) high at the shoulders and weigh from 23 to 34 kg (50 to 75 lb). The rough coated is a working dog that was used to herd sheep. The smooth collie was used to guide instinct to market.
