Newfoundland Dog

The Newfoundland dog is a large powerful breed of dog that resembles the Saint Bernard in general appearance. The average height for males is 70 cm (28 in), for females, 65 cm (26 in). Males weigh about 67.5 kg (150 lb), and females weigh 54 kg (120 lb). Newfoundland dog have long coats, massive heads, small drop ears, bushy tails, and webbed toes. The coat is double. The undercoat is thick and soft, whereas the outer coat is short and fine on the head, and long, flat and dense on the body. The outer coat is coarse and oily. Newfoundland are glossy black in color. Varieties with white and a black patch are known as Landseers.

The origins of the Newfoundland are uncertain, with the Great Pyrenees (brought to Newfoundland by Basque fishermen). French hounds, and the husky all being motioned as ancestors. The breed emerged at the end of the 18th century in Newfoundland.


The Newfoundland dog is an able water dog, known to save drowning humans. It is also used as a draft and pack animals. This dog like a Sussex Dog but with different hair color.
