Sussex Spaniel Dog

The Sussex spaniel was developed at the end of 18th century in Sussex, England, when the need arose for a substantial hunting dog for rough terrain. Among the rarest purebred dogs, the Sussex has a good nose but not the speed of Springer and cocker Spaniels and is more massive than most spaniels. The breed is most distinctive trait is the color of its straight or slightly wavy coat, a solid rich golden river. The dog stand 38 to 40 cm (15 to 16 inch) high at the shoulder and weighs 18 to 20 kg (40 – 45 lb). The head is large, as are the ears, which are carried flat against the side of the head. The tail is set low and docked 13 to 18 cm (5 to 7 in). The cost is abundant, with feathering on the legs, ears, and tail.

The Sussex Spaniel is a compact short legged sporting dog breed to hunt upland game in thick underbrush. The Sussex Spaniel commonly battles weight problems so he should have sufficient exercise daily. Swimming and retrieving are sports this breed really enjoys. This dog does okay without a yard but loves a brisk run.
