The Welsh terrier is a small, rough coated dog with small drop and an erect, docked tail. The coat is black and tan, the black forming a saddle over the back. The Welsh terrier stands about 38 cm (115 in) at the shoulder and weighs about 9 kg (20 lb). It is hardy and game but quit and less excitable than the fox terrier. Developed in Wales to hunt foxes, and otters, the breed was first imported into the United States in the late 19th century.
