Saint Bernard Dog

The saint Bernard dog is a breed of dog famed as a rescuer of snowbound travelers in the Swiss Alps. Its name is derived from the Swiss monastery the Hospice of Saint Bernard, whose monks developed the breed sometimes between 1660 and 1670. Many suggestion have been offered regarding the ancestry and antiquity of the saint Bernard, among them that the breed traces back to the Tibetan mastiff or that it is descended from the Roman mastiff or molossus.

The Saint Bernard is the heaviest breed recognized by the American Kennel Clubs: although usually from 63 to 77 kg (140 to 170 lb), dogs of 90 kg (200 lb) are not uncommon. Males must be at least 70 cm (27.5 in) high at the shoulder; while the female is about 65 cm (25.5 in) high at the shoulder. The two coat types are longhaired and shorthaired, red and white or brindle and white.
